What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process that supports people in understanding and working through emotional, psychological, and relational challenges. In Ontario, psychotherapy is a regulated health service that involves developing a safe, professional relationship with a trained practitioner to explore thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and life experiences that may be causing distress or getting in the way of well-being.

Through conversation and evidence-based approaches, psychotherapy can help people make sense of their experiences, build coping skills, improve relationships, and create meaningful change. It is used to address concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, relationship difficulties, and life transitions.

Psychotherapy is always voluntary, confidential, and tailored to each person’s goals, values, and circumstances.

Hi, I’m Francis Wooby, a social worker, counsellor, and someone who knows change is possible, even when it feels out of reach.

Working in the social services and community development world in various roles for over 20 years, I began focusing on direct mental health support work over a decade ago, pursuing my BSW at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. I am registered in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), and am an active member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside a wide variety of folks through their encounters with anxiety, depression, grief, burnout, relationship issues, difficulty with family, and major life transitions.

My approach is collaborative, practical, and grounded in evidence-based practice. We’ll work together to understand what’s happening in your life, explore patterns that might not be serving you, and develop effective tools to support your mental and emotional functioning and wellness..

I draw on a blend of proven approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based strategies, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma-informed and strengths-based perspectives. At the heart of it all, my work is about connection; meeting you where you’re at and helping create opportunities for you to be your authentic, best self.
